In order to qualify as a Department of Transport Approved Driving instructor (ADI) you have to pass three exams, known as Parts One, Two and Three.

Part one - Theory Test

This two-part examination consists of a computer based multiple-choice test and a video based hazard perception test. The multiple-choice test has 100 questions, designed to examine your theoretical understanding of the Highway Code, driving technique, teaching methods and general motoring knowledge. Candidates are allowed 90 minutes to complete the test. Following this, the hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting one minute. You gain marks by identifying hazards as soon as they are noticed, the earlier you do so, the higher the score, with a maximum mark of 5 on each of the hazards. These tests are held on a daily basis at local centres around the country.
